Ports survey project examples

A survey to help pinpoint the cause of a collapsed pier

After a pier collapse an accurate bottom survey was needed to help pinpoint the cause of the failure. Using The AQC Precision Sonar System, detailed X, Y and Z information could be gathered and exported into a CAD program. Our system was chosen due to the good range resolution and its ability to obtain a profile under the pile docks. Initially, side-scan images were recorded of the area and used to plan the survey.

A survey to locate an underwater high spot in a port

On the west coast of Mexico, on the way into port, a barge hit a high spot and sustained considerable damage. The high spot had to be located and identified before the arrival of the next barge in 5 days. Side-scan sonar images located a possible target in the approach channel. The target proved to be a large boulder, possibly broken away from the breakwater. A DGPS system was used to geo-reference the boulder to sub-meter accuracy. Using the profiling sonar a 3D image of the rock was produced and used for insurance purposes.
